Houston Chronicle:
The informal mood, the cast emerging
from the bar crowd, the brusque and punchy staging, the vigorous and at
times explosive performance, and the evocative use of projections, sound
montages and other production effects - just about everything adds to
the sense of an out-of-the-ordinary experience rather than a more
typical play...after Horse Head’s comparably punchy Red Light Winter and
Fault Lines, I’d say this new company is three for three.

Houston Press Art Attack:
At its core, the play is not so much a story
as it is an exploration of violence and crowds, using Buford's own
personal experience with British soccer hooligans in the 1980s as the ways and means.

staged, raucously realized, brutally brazen and boisterously bold production of Among The Thugs.

Houston Press Art Attack blog says:
After two successful shows boasting acting
and design talent, plus a penchant for dirty, male-oriented dialogue,
Horse Head Theatre is going male-only for its third production, a stage
adaptation of Louisiana journalist Bill Buford's acclaimed 1990
non-fiction book Among the Thugs.

Then there are the
thinking-out-of-the-black-box folks like Kevin Holden of Horse Head
Theatre Company, who staged Fault Lines at Brewery Tap. Horse
Head's next play, Among the Thugs, takes place in the basement of the
Magnolia Ballroom. Holden promises lots of atmosphere, including a dank
basement stench.

Houston Chronicle's "Best of 2009"
Red Light Winter is among 16 of "this year's most memorable shows."
The Houston Chronicle says:
Red Light Winter: Horse Head Theatre, a
new group, made a strong debut with its hard-hitting realization of Adam
Rapp's provocative tragicomedy about two buddies' encounter with a
Amsterdam prostitute and its complicated aftermath. As a lovestruck
suicidal loner, indie-theater favorite Troy Schulze gave perhaps his
best performance yet.

CEREMONY NEWS:
Horse Head Theatre Company Gets Its Ritual On
by dancehunter
for 29-95.com
Kevin Holden and the
co-conspirators at Horse Head Theatre Company are determined to shake up
the status quo. To launch their inaugural season they have planned Ceremony, which will serve to train audiences members in the way of the Horse Head.
29-95: Can you give us a tiny teaser on what to expect in Ceremony?
KH: From 9 p.m. to midnight it should be an
interesting evening of drinking and ambiance. At midnight, we'll see an
explosion of sensory input that should create a euphoric, primal, soul
tempest.
29-95: The tag line reads, “exotic. altering. tantric. explosive.” Care to explain?
KH: These are words to describe passionate sex, a good art experience should be quite similar.

Ceremony: Horse Head Theatre says "Hello, Houston" with a mix of lights, dance and sound
by Dusti Rhodes of the Houston Press
Horse Head, Houston's latest
theater troupe, begins each run with a cocktail reception/paganish
ritual dance party. The event is meant to ease patrons into Horse
Head's freestyle performance, which is more akin to a sporting event or
a rock show than an average night at the theater. Drinking will be
interrupted by synchronized lights and sound, and patrons are
encouraged to do whatever they want.
