Horse Head sought to re-energize Houston audiences and artists with theatrically designed experiences using local talent and non-traditional methods. Horse Head was committed to producing Houston, regional and world premieres.

Our vision was to inspire empathy and engagement. We only produced visceral art with a purpose.

"Let us tell you a story."

WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE: ANNOUNCING HORSE HEAD’S WAKE

Generously underwritten by Dr. Robert Card & Karol Kreymer
For the last ten years (2009 - 2019) Horse Head brought Houston audiences visceral, artist-driven theatrical experiences in exciting non-traditional locations, at affordable prices. But, all good things must come to an end.

From the closing company, circa January 2019:

Due to economic and environmental changes specific to our community, we have become unable to raise enough funds to sustain operations that fully support our artistic vision. Rather than our asking company to return to working for free (as we did for many years), scaling back our programming, decreasing artists’ fees, slashing production budgets or pursuing unknown and unlikely funding sources, we have made the difficult decision to close as a producing company. We didn’t know it, but 2018 was Horse Head’s final season. And it was a hell of a season.

To celebrate our impending, seemingly unavoidable, all-too-soon death, we’ve decided to throw ourselves a wake: a one-night-only encore performance of WE’RE GONNA DIE by Young Jean Lee on Monday, February 11, 2019 @ 8pm at The Secret Group. This event is generously underwritten by Dr. Robert Card & Karol Kreymer.

Horse Head presented WE’RE GONNA DIE in Summer 2018, touring it to various Houston venues to sold-out houses. Somewhere in between a play and a concert, WE’RE GONNA DIE is a collection of real-life stories about tragedy, isolation and mortality, expertly paired with unique life-affirming songs about the one thing we all have in common: we’re all gonna die.

This remount event is directed by Artistic Director Jacey Little in league with Musical Director & Arranger Alli Villines, with Costume Design by Clair Hummel and Dramaturgy by Leah Short. Horse Head’s production features Alli with her three trusty ukuleles, Alan Simmons
on double bass and Gitiim Chakamoi percussion. This is Houston’s last opportunity to experience a Horse Head production and this breathtaking show.

While Horse Head the organization is leaving, our artists are not. We employed over 60 individual artists in the last two years alone -- and these people are still here! They are actively creating in Houston! So, go out and experience their work. Go out and DONATE to your other favorite arts groups -- not just once a year when they ask, but at EVERY opportunity. Houston nonprofit groups are hurting, they are dying, and they need your support.

We have worked with some of the best artists in Houston and we are so thankful for our donors, supporters, the press, and the creative community of this city. Horse Head was created to serve and celebrate Houston artists and we feel that we’ve accomplished this in our ten years as a company.

Thank you, Houston.
