LISTEN: HOUSTON MATTERS
WE’RE GONNA DIE by Young Jean Lee
Generously underwritten by Dr. Robert Card & Karol Kreymer
Directed by Jacey Little
Musical Direction & Arrangements by Alli Villines
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2019 @ 8PM
THE SECRET GROUP, 2101 POLK ST. (HOU 77003)
Young Jean Lee’s WE’RE GONNA DIE is somewhere in between a play and a concert. With an open-mic night vibe, performer Alli Villines shares a collection of real-life stories about tragedy, isolation and mortality; that alone in-pain feeling we all experience, often more than we’d like to admit. But tonight, you’re not alone. With disarming candor, Alli brings us together through song. This life-affirming concert is about the one thing we all have in common: WE’RE GONNA DIE -- a thought that becomes ironically comforting, if we embrace it together.

“There is comfort, Ms. Lee suggests, in public celebration of the private misery we keep locked away for fear it will leave us too exposed… [WE’RE GONNA DIE is a] forthright acknowledgment that life can is a rough business is bracing, funny and, yes, consoling.” - New York Times
“Now, it may well be that we're all just grasping at straws of solace in uncertain times. But "We're Gonna Die" provides a memento mori with heart, rhythm and dollops of unvarnished wisdom. That is indeed beautiful.”- Chicago Tribune
"Death and denial were made for each other, but for those facing tragedy, the raw truth can be a tonic.” - LA Times
